Folding futon mattress is a bed that serves as seating when not used for sleeping. Mattress is not associated with frame, making it more portable than conventional sofa beds. Mattresses come in sofa, love seat and chair sizes and a wide range of designs to match most decors. These instructions are for a mattress that is longer than it is wide. Only minor changes are necessary to adapt them to different shaped mattresses.
Open folding futon mattress frames and measure length and width. Lay fabric face down on floor or a large flat surface. Cover fabric with batting, which is actual length and width of futon frame, leaving uncovered 4 inches on each edge. Score foam down center of place; mattress will fold when futon is erect. Measure to find center and draw a straight line to use as a guide. Put foam on one side of fabric with cut side down. Lift piece of fabric and batting and thoroughly fold it over so that edge meets opposite edge. Line up short sides so that you have a rectangular package with foam in middle, then batting and then fabric. Use straight pins to keep things in place.
Start creating seams on one of short ends. Folding futon mattress as if you were wrapping a gift. Fold corners on both sides, pull unfinished ends together, fold one below other and use straight pins to secure it. Use a slipstitch sewing seam. Repeat this process on other two sides or sew a large bag type zipper to remaining open side so that fabric can be removed for washing.
